I'm currently on a 2010 MBP 15" and I like to use Chrome, however, as discussed it wreaks havoc on the battery. When I upgrade to a retina machine, will I be able to use Chrome again or do I have to stick to Safari/Firefox exclusively in order to stay away from the wall charger?

Safari is the best for battery life. I've come to love it lately, I like the performance. I run Mavericks on a first gen MBPr.
Most people agree that Chrome is the best browser overall, but nothing beats the sw/hw integration if you're on a latest gen Mac with the latest OS. Just my two cents.

I find the Glims package for Safari, together with a good choice of extensions, improves the Safari experience no end...and still leaves you with good battery life :)
