Amongst other keys, my f5 key is broke and has left me unable to turn my keyboard brightness off. I am using a new keyboard and find the lighting up of the keys to be quite annoying. Is there anyway to turn off keyboard brightness without the f5 key.

You might try going to "SystemPreferences / Keyboard" and unchecking "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light". I think that might disable the keyboard backlight.
