17" iMac 1.83 core 2 duo display mirror issues

I have an older iMac that I am trying to connect to my plasma tv through a mini DVI to HDMI adapter. The screen will show up on the TV but it is a red color and staticky. Tried a bunch of different HDMI cables and a couple of different HDMI ports and got the same thing. Am I out of luck since this thing is so old? Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere?
