AMD HD 7970 3GB and external PSU 500w

I have a 500W DC 12V power supply I was using for an external RAID I no longer use. It has 115v and 230v selections. Will this one work to power my AMD HD 7970 3GB or does it have too much wattage? The AMD HD 7970 takes a 6pin connection and an 8pin connection. I want to power it externally because I have another HD 7970 that will be in the Mac Pro as well and it is taking the existing motherboard connections. I"m hoping and safely assuming I can buy an 8pin and a 6pin to molex connections for it.. Thanks
