fullscreen 1080 video on 27" imac

When i try and watch a 1080p (or 720 for that matter) video from YouTube or the like in fullscreen on the iMac the video looks soft because its stretching it to fit the full res of the screen. Is there any way around this? Im fine with black bars at the top and bottom if need be. 1440 obviously looks great fullscreen but anything less looks like watching SD content on an HD tv. Thanks
