My mate's Windows 7 laptop won't get past the bootup sequence without shutting itself down (some overheating issue).

Can I take the HD out, put it in a USB enclosure and somehow boot it from my Mac?

Or is there any way to make a back up or clone via my Mac, just so we can make sure his data's safe?

Booting is probably a big no, but there may be a complicated workaround somewhere to be found.

As for data backup, either do it by hand via Finder or look into WinClone.

Via Finder will I be able to see the drive and its data if I just put it inside a USB enclosure? Will it just mount like a USB stick does?
