Google supposedly relaxes name policy

When we launched Google+ over three years ago, we had a lot of restrictions on what name you could use on your profile. [...] Today, we are taking the last step: there are no more restrictions on what name you can use.

Does anyone know how to actually set your preferred name? Apparently you're able to go to plus.google.com, select Profile from the menu in the top left, and then click on your name to change it. However, this UI still complains when I enter my preferred name. It appears that Google has changed the policy on paper but hasn't updated the software. What am I missing?
