Hello - I'm buying the iPhone6 when it comes out.

I want to minimize my data usage. Will most/all apps download and work over wifi, when only wifi is on? It seems like some might not work (like Uber), because they use GPS, and they dont seem to use 'WiFi location'.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Don't be a cheapskate and forget about getting some 200mb/month plan. Get a 2gb plan and be done with it.

Nope. I'm getting a TMobile pay-by-the-day plan. No contract. I go for long periods w/o using a cell phone, then have bursts of activity (almost unlimited use is allowed on the days you use it).

I spent $120 last year on my smartphone plan with TMobile. That's $10/mo.

Hmmmm…how about unlimited? I'm on Sprint, but you can get unlimited on T-Mobile as well.

Blows the hell out of a 2GB limit. :D

Unlimited, yeah. Hits 2gb and slows to a snails pace. Almost unusable.
If you're on Sprint. :D

Sprint doesn't throttle (unless you are in the top 5% of heavy data users connected to a congested tower). However, the network is bad in a lot of areas so it has the same effect.

That's why I mentioned T-Mobile in my post too. Their network is good (in cities) and they don't throttle.

Anyone have an idea on this? Will most apps download/work over wifi only?

No. Most apps work over what ever data connection. That is the point. You can customize settings to a point. You can limit which apps can use cellular and stuff like background app refresh, etc.

Oops. Sorry, i worded it wrong. I meant to ask "will apps work when you only have wifi on?"...... obviously all apps will work over cellular.

So it sounds like they will work over wifi also. The reason i ask is that i couldnt get Uber to work over wifi (on an iOs emulator). But maybe that's because it was an emulator.

Apps don't care where the data comes from. The system manages that. The only app that won't work over wifi is the phone, but on some carriers even that will work over wifi if it is available.

Awesome. Thank you!
Would you happen to know which carriers allow that? Never heard of that.

In the US, T-Mobile allows wifi calling and iOS 8 will open the capability to other carriers.

Thank you! I am going with TMobile anyway, for their pay-by-the-day plan. Wifi calling is a bonus.

Thanks.

Not all apps. Some are designed for use with cellular connection.
