Icons Not Able to Be Changed

Hey guys, I know how to change an icon for a file, but when I click the small icon and copy and paste another one from another location, all I get is the .png filetype image, and the f'n png does not show! It is driving me crazy. Ever since I loaded Yosemite on ANOTHER PARTITION I've had nothing but problems. Is this related? I want to be done with this @#$*@
