imac 2010 - External Hybrid Drive?

Hi there,

I've looked into upgrading my white iMac with an SSD, but im not comfortable cracking it open and removing shielding.

I know FW800 is a bottleneck for SSD, but perhaps getting a 3.5" Hybrid Drive in an FW 800 external enclosure would work?

Would I still get the benefits of Hybrid if I use it as an external boot drive?

IMO, no, you can't overcome the bottleneck of FW800 speed, so its really not worth contemplating IMO. I did a drive replacement on a 2006 17" white iMac and it wasn't very difficult at all, however you may have some difficulty securing an SSD inside your iMac as it only has room for a 3.5" drive and I believe it would only run at SATA 3 speeds anyway, still it would be faster then FW800.
 
As ashman said, it it in a terrible idea. You will have greater speeds from the internal HDD.

If you really don't want to open in, find someone else who can do it for you.
 
No point in using an external, FW 800 drive for any kind of speed improvement. The internal SSD option is far superior. Totally worth having a friend do it for you if they're comfortable cracking the computer open.

By the way, if your iMac is white, it's not a 2010 model. The last white models were made in 2006. So your HD is 8 years old which is pretty old.
