rMBP 15,4" (Mid-2014) - SDXC speed?

Hello there,

I'm currently looking for a way to add some storage for my rMBP 15,4" and thought about buying a SDXC (UHS) card. But is it worth it? I think the card reader is connected via the USB3.0-bus (up to 5Gbit), but does it support UHC-cards?
 
I did a quick google search and it looks like someone who had a Retina 15" put in a 95mb/sec SD card in and it only performed at about 20mb/sec read/write. So for storage purposes looks fine.. Doesn't look like it has a full speed bus.
 
My rMBP 15" mid-2014 can read from SanDisk Extreme PLUS (80MB/s) with actual speed about 95MB/s

check that card out. I bought one of these for my retina. Sometimes the write speeds are awfully low, especially with writing many small files at the same time. But I dont use that drive for application storage, only for music and movies and it works exceptionally well.

Also its flush with the case of the macbook, which is a great bonus.

I'm looking for a card to store a VM on. I just need to use it for 3-4 applications, but if UHSI/UHS2-cards work it would be nice. But I still need a confirmation.

Is the JetDrive Mini or similar any good or should I just use an USB-stick? Not by all means for a VM, but as an storage-extension in general.

I'm still looking for an answer. I just don't want to stress the internal SSD too much.

Don't worry about internal SSD, it will be working just fine even 5 years from now by using it with daily write around 20GB of data which almost nobody will do. I strongly recommend to buy external HDD with at least 1TB of space, it will cost you like fast 128GB SD card but with 10 times more space.

And why would I use an external HDD on a mobile device? That's not the point ;). For backups I'll soon buy a NAS.

I use the Nifty micro SD carrier with a Sandisk Ultra 128GB card. I bought it for storing stuff, not realtime read/write. It's listed as a 30MB/s card, I get roughly 12-15MB/s write speed and 45MB/s read.

I store all my VMs though on the SSD, it's way way way faster. I spin them up and down often and off the SSD they boot in seconds, off the SD very slowly.

Well why would you use any external drive on mobile device? I thought that you need more space for work and for that is fast external HDD best choice, I have LaCie Porche 1TB HDD connected via USB 3.0 and can't complain about speed at all and when I know that I'm going somewhere I just make copy of files that I will need on internal SSD.

I won't carry an external HDD around.

I don't actually have the drive, so I don't know for sure. I'm personally waiting for the Early 2013/Mid-2014 compatible nifty drive.(which is suppose to release next month) The Nifty provides more flexibility, being able to use any micro SD card out there. It is also perfectly flush, while the JetDrive protrudes a little. The main plus side of the Jet Drive is that the 128GB offers high speed performance (95/60 read/write) where as I can't find a 128GB micro sd with that kind of performance so for Nifty I would be out of luck.

With that said, the JetDrive seems like a great option.
