You've pressed the right button

Trending this week are Mount Tavurvur (Papua New Guinea), the Bárđarbunga volcano (Iceland), the Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador) & Mount Slamet (Indonesia).

At just over a giant's step to the east of Eyjafjallajökull, Bárđarbunga is rumbling at one temblor per minute. Top cats are scoping and scheming auxiliaries to avoid a 2010 megajam, and local authorities are booting tourists from the area. Here's a travel crisis management congress which will be held Oct 2014 in Houston, in case you are in the travel/transport business.

You can lay your peeps on some live action going on here, along with some extra live instrument feeds.
Top left there's a drop menu to choose from; Tavurnur is not on the list, Tungurahua has a few cool feeds (here's also a archived video). This website needs some poking around. To enlarge a window, drag from bottom right, then close it back in.

Close to any of these locations? Drop us a line, maybe a photo too.
Were you affected in 2010? How frustrated were you really?
Are you a Volcanologist/Seismologist? How about sharing a scientific opinion? And on what kind of computer do you run simulations?

Really cool stuff...

A family member just left for Iceland...I know he'd be thrilled to be stuck there for a while. :D

Hopefully you're not on a flight crossing the pond form say, London to JFK. After you pass Shannon, should the unthinkable happen, the closest place your flight could divert to without continuing all the way to Gander would be Keflavik, followed by Reykjavik. I'd be surprised that Iceland would keep their airspace open.

Recently though, we had a number of flights start from SFO going westbound, reach Anchorage, and instead of diverting to Vancouver, fly all the way back to SFO because of Mt. Redoubt going off. Mt. Redoubt killed nearly every cargo and passenger flight coming from Asia at that time; it hurt doubly so, because the first shipments of iPhones were being flown out when Redoubt blew its lid.

Well he landed this morning, so if it gets bad he's sticking around!

Although yeesh, getting as far as anchorage just to return to SFO....sounds like a miserable flight.

Mt Redoubt is described in wikipedia as : "Active for millennia"..!

iPhone fun fact epitomized the scale of the disaster :D

Picture of Redoubt when it blew its top in 2009, causing a lot of cargo and pax flights to divert to Seattle, SFO, and Vancouver:

That caused this:

Oh, and because the tops of the ash reached 65000 ft, it caused Anchorage Int'l to shut down completely.

Now, with Iceland, IIRC, weather patterns pretty much have the winds flowing west to east in that area, so if the volcano blew there, the ash is headed towards Shannon, which would kill every stop/diversion for a flight along the NAT tracks. This could effectively kill British Airways #1, as it is now an A319, instead of the Concorde. It can make the JFK-London run without a problem eastbound, but must stop at Shannon to refuel for the westbound trip (plus US pax can clear customs there).
