Hi,

I've narrowed down the noise on my 2009 mac pro to the single CPU booster fan. I'd like to oil it, or replace it.

There's a possibility that the fan is actually just vibrating against the heatsink and causing the noise, or the noise could be coming from the actual fan.

I know that most people say that the fan and heatsink are one unit, but when googling the heatsink, if you flip it over, you can clearly see the fan (picture below) shows heatsink for a dual cpu model, but the layout is basically the same on mine).

I'm wondering if anyone has removed this fan in order to repair/replace/oil?

I'll be changing the CPU for a W3690 soon, so the heatsink will be off and i'll have a chance to look at it/do any repairs.

Cheers for any advice/input!

Ed

Bump!

I replaced the CPU and looked at the fan, but was too scared to mess with it because i needed the machine up and running.

Cheers,

Ed
