Can anyone help. I've been trying to tidy my Mac and it seems to be telling me more than a third of my computer is full of.... other.

That Other section is everything that does not fall into one of the other categories listed there. This readout comes from the Spotlight index and if that index is corrupted the readings will be off.

Code: 
sudo mdutil -E /

Open Terminal and run this command to reindex Spotlight then take a look at the space readout after the reindex is complete.
