On the eve of Apple's September 9 special event, the Financial Times has released a new look at how Apple is impacting the wearable market despite not having officially announced its first wearable product. Specifically, the paper cites Forrester Research, who notes Apple could sell 10 million iWatches in its first year, which would make it the best-selling wrist-based wearable ever.

Forrester Research believes Apple will sell as many as 10m iWatches in its first year. That, Forrester says, is more than all the other manufacturers of wrist-based wearables have sold to date, including Nike's Fuelband fitness tracker, Samsung's Gear smartwatches and devices by younger companies such as Fitbit and Jawbone.
Other analysts, like Morgan Stanley, predict that Apple could sell as many as 30 - 60 million iWatches within the first year. Both research firms predict that Apple would lead the wearable market, with Forrester Research analysts James McQuivey and JP Gownder saying that only Google and Amazon would be "close behind", while everyone else would be the equivalent of the "next Flipcam, Palm Pilot or Nook eReader".

Late last week, Sung-jin Lee, LG's director of watch product planning, told Reuters that Apple offering its own wearable product would expand the market. Sunny Lee, CEO of Samsung Europe, agreed, noting that that is "what [Samsung] wanted". While it doesn't seem like LG and Samsung's comments corroborate McQuivey and Gownder's prediction, it does seem to indicate that both companies think that Apple could give the wearable market a boost.

Today's event, which looks to be one of the biggest Apple events in some time, will begin at 10 a.m. PST. The company is expected to debut its long-rumored wearable and a brand new mobile payment initiative alongside the debut of the iPhone 6 in both 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch varieties.

Apple could sell 10 million unannounced products in one year! Wow! I really want their job making this stuff up. Where do I apply?

The future of the iPod

Am I the only one who thinks the "iwatch" will in fact be the new generation "iPod". The iPod makes up 1 percent of their revenue. What will they do when it drops below 1 percent in a few years? Kill off the iPod line? They have to evolve that product line some how. Turn it in to a wearable. I think this is the answer. iPod. iPhone. iPad. No more, no less. No fourth category of device.

Lmaoooo you gotta be kidding me . These analysts are really annoying . How TF is he able to draw that conclusion ?!

Wow, that is a lot of watches! As amazing as Apple products usually are, I don't (yet) see myself as needing a wearable device. I am hoping that Apple completely changes my mind and creates this new market. I am seriously skeptical that it will happen.

I still wonder what the final name will be. iPod iPhone iPad are all portable apple tech starting with iP - also one syllable. Will Apple follow suit? Or just roll with watch?

That's actually really genius. I think you might be on to something.

This seems quite possible. Even more so since U2 are involved.

I don't see Apple throwing good money after bad. Why would you develop a new product in a declining segment that accounts for 1% of your business? There's really little point for stand-alone MP3 players when every phone has one built in, especially at Apple's price points. The only MP3 of value is the iPod Touch, which is useful for kids too young for their own smartphone, and anymore you should just spring for a non-retina iPad Mini.

Just realized that apple.com counting down to the event is a subtle hint of an iwatch. I don't recall apple had done anything like this before, so its a first.

Very subtle Apple!!

Calling it a "watch" would give you a narrow perspective of what it could do. The word "pod" is nonspecific.

Another prediction I think that if it is released in 2015 they will create some new wireless headphones or wireless earbuds using beats hardware. I think they would match the style of the device depending on the color, or the strap wether it be leather or metal. If the technology is right it would be cool if they could do something like the new Motorola hint

After this is all over it's going to be funny to look back at how wrong or right every one is.

I am of course hoping for a new category of device that was a fundamental change to how I use technology, like how smart phones were.

However the I have a feeling that this will simply be large screen iPhones with a big push to how they work with OSX.

Apple have had seperate events for iphone and ipad. You would think if there was a new major product announcement it would at least be seperate.

So a product you've never seen, whose functions you know nothing about could sell between 10 and 60 million units. What's your opinion on toaster-fridges?

Am I the3 only one thinking this "iwatch" isnt happening. I mean it be great and all for the industry (imo I wouldnt get it) but there been no parts leaks or whatever of any kind...
