With the recent announcements of Nvidia's newest GPUs, is there any chance these could work in Mavericks or Yosemite?

Their low price points @ $299 (970 Ref) $329 AIB, and $549 for the 980, and their low TDP of 148W and 175W, they seem to be tailor made for the wattage requirements in the cMP.

Any thoughts or insights?

Of course. I'm just excited!

Me too as to the GTX 980 and that post 4k resolution of 5100 x 3200 @ 60 Hz, and that 2x6 power pins, and that hugh boost in per core performance, and that larger L2 cache (2M), and those 64 ROPs, and those higher base and boost speeds, and that additional gig of Vram, and that 165W TDP, and that 4.6 TFLOPs, and on and on [ http://videocardz.com/52362/only-at-vc-nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-final-specifications ].

In the past Nvidia's been pretty good about support. I wonder if the new Mac Pro changes that. I mean, how many people are going to continue upgrading their workstations with new Nvidia cards? I haven't checked, do people use Quadros and Teslas in Thunderbolt enclosures?

They've been GREAT! I certainly hope nothing changes. If Apples keeps using Nvidia Graphics in iMac and some MacBook Pros, hopefully the faucet will keep on flowing. AMD has absolutely no support outside of Apple.

The new 980 does not have displayport 1.3. I wonder if thats something not supported by gm204 or if it can be added like lets say on some special edition 980 later down the road.

Awesome cards. but osx isn't ready for them yet.

On 10.10 Yeti with nvidia web driver, gtx750ti (close brother of new cards) has problems with transparency/blured parts of window and opencl is broken.

Do you think Nvidia will release OSX web drivers for the 970 and 980? For both Mavericks and Yosemite?

The biggest advantage I think is not only the performance, which is awesome; but that it only needs 2 6-pin PCIe power cables.

That's a drop in upgrade without having to try and source an extra power supply and mod it into the chassis.
Looks like NVIDIA drastically stepped up their OpenCL games, and it's damn well priced as well. :)

I'm looking forward to what the flagships GM210 is going to do.

EDIT: with those low TDP's, and great performance NVIDIA might be even end up in the the new Mac Pro, as either the defaults cards, or as an option.

Will the baseplate be an issue fitting into the cMP? Looks like it adds 34MM, and only a small part is removeable.

Realizing of course that it could be placed in slot 2, but would hope to avoid blocking slot 3 since it's double wide.

Hope it fits!

You raise a good point regarding slot1. I've experienced a little frustration with getting my backplated GTX 590s in slot1 of my MacPros without a slight tilt. I have them installed their, but it's not what I would have preferred. To remove or not to remove that bluish protective pad, that may be the question.

I have been contemplating on picking up one since i live about 15 minutes away from a Microcenter just to see if it even recognizes at all. I have a feeling from what I have been reading I may need to wait a little longer for one to work.
