iPhone 6 plus - capacity 55.6 GB on a 64 GB model

64e9 (SI units)/1073741824 = 59.6 GiB. The memory size starts with 59.6GB in binary units. The OS further reduces the size. What's left is the capacity, my phone shows 56GB capacity.

Also, there are little issues with all RAM products....dead cells, without going into a long explanation. It's always been this way.
My first iPhone 6 64gb had 58.4gb free on initial startup. My second one had 56.9gb free on initial startup.
I have a 6 Plus 128gb on order. I wonder what that will show? But, since those are made of unobtanium, who knows when I will find out!?!?!?

Normal. That's what mine says too.
Though, I've always wondered why the larger storage devices have so more more storage taken up by the OS and system.
My 32GB iPhone had 27.8GB Free
My 64GB iPad had 57GB Free
My 64GB iPhone 6 has 55.6 Free
When I had a 128GB iPad Air it only had like 116GB Free

It will have been installed when you first took it out the box.

Its not that the OS is taking up more space, it's that the labeled capacity isn't the same as formatted capacity. spacemnspiff gives a good explanation of this. Using his given example of 64GB = 59.6 GiB as a base:
32GB -> 29.8GiB and 2 GB for the OS
64GB -> 59.6GiB and 2.6 GB for iPad OS or 4GB for the iPhone OS
128GB ->119.2GiB and 3GB for the OS
lwilliams also pointed out that there are going to be differences just due to the memory not being flawless, and so the capacity would be lowered because of that as well.
Between your 64GB iPad and 64GB iPhone, I'd imagine that they'd have slightly different free space, but not 1.4GB difference.
It's frustrating that the advertised storage isn't the 'available to user' storage, but them are the brakes it seems.

I want to see them reinstalled because I don't believe they were there when i open the box on launch day.
It probably has been. Wouldn't surprise me at all. Back when the issue of the missing space used to bother me, I didn't explore these forums or try to look it up online. I just accepted that a 32GB iPod meant ~27.5GB of music, and a 16GB android phone allowed ~13-14GB of whatever.
I wrote it out just to make sure it was brought to the attention of Traverse. Not sure if they hadn't seen it, or if it went right over their head, just wanted to point it out for their benefit. Trying to be helpful you know?
