I'll be quick:

On my MacBook Air, I have iTunes that points to my library on an external hard drive. I recently purchased iTunes Match. When I go to play a song with the hard drive disconnected it tries to locate the file -- I understand why this happens, and when I cancel the dialogue it streams from my iTunes Match library instead.

Is there a way to have it simply default to playing songs from the cloud without getting the dialogue box every time?

Turn off iTunes Match and disconnect the hard drive. After that select all music in iTunes and delete them all. Turn on iTunes Match and there you go, all cloud music.
