I am uploading (a lot) to dropbox, and the fan volume is VERY high ...

Is this bad for the computer? It says it has 43 (!) hours to go

Fan noise is extremely loud in new iMac retina ... I'm only uploading to Dropbox!

Other than menu bar applications, it's literally all that's running.

If you've just moved files over to your iMac, Spotlight could still be busy indexing your drive(s). Use Activity Monitor to see if that's the case.

Ah ... What would it show up as in activity monitor?

Also, is it normal for something in activity monitor to be called "kernel" or something like that? (I'm not at my home computer right now).

Thanks!

kernel_task is the process that basically runs your computer. Don't want to quit that ;-).

SystemUIServer is the process you want to check about using lots of CPU time.

Thanks. Will report back later.

I've read a lot that the upgraded gpu makes fans run, but I'm not gaming or doing anything graphically intensive.

Dropbox DOES show a VERY high usage on activity monitor ... IT's uploading over 200,000 files (180 GB).

That being said, the computer is def. louder than 2012.
