Curious, in my search to find a way to turn an iPad into a second display for holding stuff like image reference for art I've seen Duet mentioned a few times.

If it's no good, any suggestions for a great second display application?

Contrary to all the press and the listed requirements on the App Store, Duet does not work with "all iPads". The developer apparently knows this, but allows the misinformation to propagate anyway. I recommend you find something else, based on that alone.

I am sure, but all the announcements say 'all iPads', and the App Store requirements says "5.1.1 and later." Write-ups talk about how nice it will be to put that old iPad back to work.

The reality is that it does not work on 5.1.1 on the original iPad. It apparently does not work on anything other than iOS 8. They know this. It is hard to see this as anything but deliberate deception.
