I am going to purchase a mini to use as a server at home.

I am planning on using it for TM backups for 4 Macs, af possible Minecraft server for the kids, and a home automation server for Homeseer or Indigo.
Maybe some distributed computing project with the extra CPU cycles...

External storage will be the OWC Thunderbay 4 RAID with Soft Raid.

Thought on the following:

2012 i7 Quad core
OR
2014 i5 2.6 (or i7 3.0) + 256M flash + 16 GB ram

Speced out this way they are about the same price.

Thanks for the advice.

It really depends on your needs but if you can get the 2012 with an SSD and 16 GB RAM, go that route. The 2014 has better onboard graphics though.

It probably won't matter much in your application but the 2014 mini has Thunderbolt 2 which is theoretically 100% faster than the Thunderbolt (1) in the 2012 mini.
