All messages not showing on Mac

I have a weird situation in that only 29-30 messages between certain contacts show up in Messages on my Mac. The rest seem to get deleted.
What happens is that if I send a message to one of the affected contacts the oldest message between me and them gets deleted from my Mac.
All of them - sometimes 1000s! - show on my iPad and iPhone, but not on my Mac.
Any ideas?
