Macbook Pro and Education Discount

Hey Everyone,

No Macbook Pro Update this year at MW and I know that everyone is having the same dilemma as to whether you should buy or wait for the next update.

Is it safe to say that no one really has any idea when the next update will be coming? I've heard some people say February (2 weeks), some say June, and some say in the Fall....I waited until Macworld, but I think now I'm going to have to buy in the next 2 weeks.

Will I be severely shorting myself if I buy one before the next update? I am planning on getting the new 2.6 GhZ chip and maxing out my RAM (third party) to 4 gigs. What is the risk here? Overpaying by a few hundred I suppose? Or is it something technical?

ALSO...If I have a friend who goes to school, but I recently graduated, can that person purchase the MBP for me so I can get the $200 discount? I went through the whole process in the Education store and I didn't see the discount. Is it a rebate or when do they credit you the discount?

i know exactly what you mean. i am itching to get one but am not sure if i should. i think you will be ok tho, getting the 2.4 and maxing the ram, i dont think that you would be effected to much by an update. and i think its a great idea getting your mate to get it for you, no probs in that!

Not a rebate. If you're in the education store, the prices already reflect the discount. The 2.4 base computer should show up as 2299 + the cost of the 2.6 upgrade. In the regular store, the base price is 2499.

Well, technically the discount is only for actual students. Not students AND anyone and everyone who knows a student.

That said, there's nothing stopping you from doing it, or any system in place for Apple to find out. Hell, I know plenty of people that just order through the education store regardless and hope that they're not one of the few to get randomly checked. Sooo.. do whatever you see fit. ;)

I'd not mention it here though.. in the past, members have gone on moral crusades against threads like this.

How do they randomly check? I mean do they ask you to enter your schoo ID or something like that? I mean, if its more trouble then its worth I'll just get it regular. I was just assuming that if my next door neighbor goes to college, I'll have him order it and give it to me as a "gift." (he is such a great guy..he goes around giving MBP randomly!)

Apple's been known to VERY rarely call and ask for verification that you're a student. It's never happened to me or anyone I know. Hell when I worked Apple retail, if the person the customer was WITH was a student, I'd give them the discount anyway. I loved the look on people's faces when they realized they unexpectedly saved $300+ for shopping with a student...lol.
 
I would check out amazon.com, after all the possibilities (Student Discount, ADC, Macmall, etc...) amazon came out to the cheapest. Basically ended costing me 1,750 for a MBP 2.2Ghz.
 
I'll check it out. You can buy new Macs on Amazon.com?

I am going to end up dropping 3 grand on all of this between the MBP, The 4 GB of RAM and a new printer thats compatible with both a PC and a Mac.

I just want to make sure that I can pinch pennies wherever I can!

I have asked the college I go to, they said usually there's a grace period after you've graduated, like 6 months. Within that time, you can still get the student discount.
