Next imac update?

Hi guys,

i was wondering if someone knows when the imac is being updated? I am going to buy my first mac and i really like to buy it after an update.

the buyers guide says its 22 days left to the average update. So how serious is this can some of you estimate the next update. And mayby whats going to change in that update?

No one here can tell you that - it's all speculation. The Buyers Guide looks at the average life cycle between updates so accordingly, on average, an update is due soon.

I wouldn't expect anything significant in the update, but if you don't need to buy now, then you might as well wait a few weeks. However if you want to buy soon, then buy now. It's a great machine and you would wait forever if you never bought because an upate might be around the corner.

Very good question... unfortunately, you will likely not find many answers here. I've been waiting for about 3 weeks now and finally took the plunge yesterday. (2.8Ghz, 24", 4GB (Crucial.com) ram, 750 GB)

Why? Well, after 3 weeks on the forums, no one offered one good shred of evidence that a new one was soon coming. In fact, most seemed to think it was several months off and there were even reports of the iMac's new processor (mobile penryn) being delayed.

I am hoping for a better gpu in the next update. i don't care about the speed bump.

one little question:
why are a lot of people choosing for a 4gb ram setup?

Are you a gamer? That would be the only reason I would wait for an upgraded GPU. Gaming is the virtually the ONLY time the GPU gets pushed to its limits, other than if you are trying to run multiple monitors.


RAM is the cheapest and most efficient to raise the performance of your mac. Especially now, when RAM prices are so low.

4GB of RAM (which would cost you close to $800 on apple.com) costs you only $115 on www.crucial.com

Yes i am a gamer, i want to play games like cod4, left 4 dead, c&c3, hl2, bioshock. But that's not my primary reasons to buy an imac, i will use my imac for designing and building websites and other things i like to do. I think i can't play games like cod4, left 4 dead, hl2 and bioshock at a descent fps on an Imac.
so thats why i like a better gpu.

If i buy an imac 24inch 2,4ghz with 1gb ram i can order 4gb at crucial.com and throw 1gb away an place 4gb ram in the Imac?

That makes sense... although, I don't know if the iMac will EVER be a 'gaming' machine. I am not trying to talk you out of it... just saying that if games are a big priority, I am not sure you will ever be happy with an iMac.

As for the RAM, that is correct... I am going to remove the 1GB stick in mine, replace it with two 2GB RAM sticks, and probably sell or simply throw away the stock 1GB.
 
I think the next iMac update would be a silent one. Like the Mac Pro had recently. The only thing it can upgrade to is Penryn, and a bump to about 2.6-3.2 Ghz, the graphic card (please), and maybe hard-drive? Nothing too flashy to make a keynote about so it would be silent.

You might want to hold onto your 1GB stick you received from Apple after you install your pair of 2GB ones.
If you have to send in your iMac for repairs sometimes Apple will just move your data onto a new machine and give that back to you, but you're extended memory might be overlooked and not be installed in the new machine. Also, it might be wise to take out your 4gb memory, reinstall the 1gb Apple memory before you send it in to prevent the repair shop from blaming any problems you are having on "non-Apple memory".

Just my 2 cents worth. I am waiting for my 4gb to arrive any day now.

it's really hard to predict updates. The last iMac update was nearly a year after the update before that. So it could be within a few weeks, or it could be not until summer. Trying to predict these things is a constant frustration with apple.

It is hard to predict, but as a point of reference, Intel released the Merom chip in May of 2007, and they weren't added to the iMac until August. If that means anything, if Apple's next move is to put Penryn into the iMac, we may not see that update until early April.

However, the three month delay may have been attributable to other things (such as the case redesign).
