I'm with Tiscali (I know, I know) and if I type an address in wrongly I get directed to a page like the one below rather than the normal page which adds a google search bar. This is really annoying me and I have no idea what this problem is called so can't search.

That is Tiscali messing around with a perfectly fine protocol. Nothing you can do about that except complaining to Tiscali. And nothing that Safari can do. Safari sends a request for a page to Tiscali. In return, it expects that either Tiscali returns the page, or Tiscali returns an error. Tiscali however returns a page even though it shouldn't; nothing that Safari can do about that.

Actually, from what I hear about Tiscali's quality of service since their recent software upgrade it might be much better to move away from them altogether. That seems to apply to other services as well, like Pipex, which was absolutely fine until Tiscali bought them.

I assume this is just recently or has it been doing that for a while?
I escaped Tiscali just under a year ago and it didn't do that for me when searching. I don't have any suggestions for you, just that mine didn't do that a yr ago (if yours did maybe an issue somewhere) if just recent, then I guess they do that on purpose.

Tiscali's net kept booting me every 2 mins then they blamed me  they sent new modems and all. Reeported in Jan 07, still wasn't resolved in April after all those calls to their 0870 number (gasp) so I got out of their contract because in their ToS if you haven't been sorted for 3 months then you are able to leave penalty free. Just in case you wanted to know that :) lol

[edit] Do you have Firefox at all to test whether it's the same in that when you search?

Switch to using opendns.com DNS servers instead of Tiscali provided ones. I think this will do it.

Tiscali DNS servers are (I assume) currently doing your lookups, when a lookup fails they can direct you to whatever they want as they're in control. Opendns do actually do something similar in some instances, but you might like it better than Tiscali, give it a go.

Thats better, while not a total fix anything to get passed Tiscali's pages the better and it seems to work reasonably well so far. Cheers.
