I wondered if there were any problems I should look out for, or if it will work properly at all. Will the preference files get screwed up?

I really resent that Adobe took ImageReady out of the lineup in the change to CS3. I like ImageReady, mostly because you can drop an existing GIF into it and it sees all the frames. Photoshop does not do that and I really hate using Fireworks, I can never get it to optimize properly. (makes HUGE files sizes unnecessarily)

Aaaanyway, so I want to have CS3 and parts of CS2 (ImageReady) on the same computer at the same time.

Is there anything I need to know about doing this?

Yeah - perfectly doable (I need InDesign CS2 for occasional compatibility issues with other users). You just need to make sure that CS2 is installed, registered and working before you install CS3.
