I guess that means it is past Applecare if it's DOA. :p - Did they have Applecare back then?

I like the ldea...

of having the computer sans moniter just be a keyboard.
basically, a computer in a keyboard. plug in mouse and monitor or tv, and have a fully functional computer.

Ideas?

I never really saw the point in collecting..
I collect to actually use them. It's a very clear feeling of being in close touch with what was a far, far more exciting time in computer history. In the early 80s (which is when I got into it) every machine was its own platform, really. It wasn't just Windows and Mac OS (and Linux). It was a lot more fun back then.

wow blakespot, you have an awesome collection! As for that IIC, it can't be more than one of a handful still in existence, unopened. I mean literally, a handful, like 5 or fewer.

wow!!! thats the first apple my family ever owned! That brings back memories. my mom actually won it as a prize for selling avon cosmetics!!!

he should've waited till may 5th to open it! It would've been her 20th birthday:)

And they really could have gotten some media attention for it

Yeah, I just started collecting in a small way, and I like to use them too.

I think some of the older computers are more interesting, as they sometimes took a few chances with the form factor, it wasn't all homogenous like computers are today.

I mean, can you imagine Apple building another laptop like this? ( And it's surprising how usable it still is! )

That was all the rage in the beginning... and you didn't need a monitor, you hooked the computer up to a TV :)

My first computer... 16k ram :D

The second machine... Woot 64k of ram!

Third machine ... you guessed it ... 128k ram WOO!

I had the Commodore 128 as well :) It was my second computer (the first being a Commodore 16). I remember getting the external 1571 disk drive with it. I then went high tech and bought a Commodore Amiga :D

Wish I had kept them, not for monetary reasons just because it would be cool to play with them again.

It goes from $2,553 NIB to being worth MUCH, MUCH LESS CIB, which means it's only worth about a few hundred dollars for the entire system...
Yes, but... if you read all that dansays wrote in the months after this originally transpired, you'll find that it wasn't about monetary investment - it was about the nostalgia, the recapturing of cherished youth experiences, the Apple 80's zeitgeist. And sharing that with the rest of us in an artful way, I might add.
