Petition for iPhone/iTouch Word Processors

Dear iPhone and iPod touch community,

I am starting this petition to request software developers to port some of their great desktop apps to the iPhone and iPod touch so that we may work on or at least view proprietary formats while away from our desktop and laptop computers after Apple releases the SDK in February.

These formats include files created by Word (including the latest .docx format), Montage, Final Draft, Pages, and others.

If you are an iPhone/iPod touch owner who is heavily into word processing or know anyone who is, please send an email to wordprocessingforiphone [at] gmail.com with your name, occupation, desktop word processing applications you use and which formats you would like to open on your iPhone/iPod touch.

Please post your thoughts below so this discussion thread can be linked to in the results sent to companies.
 
Thoughts?

Companies are going to be going nuts trying to make apps for the iPhone, because of the (as of yet) untapped market. Asking for a word processor to show up after the SDK would be akin to having asked Apple to include the ability to talk on the iPhone, once it was available...
 
Speaking as a screenwriter the difficulty is that some companies need to see demand before making an app. It will be easier to get .doc, .docx and .pages support because they are popular formats or Apple supports them on the desktop. But for something specialised like .fdr (Final Draft), .montage (Montage), or .scw (Magic Movie Screenwriter) formats, we really need to get the word out to writers to sign a petition so that those companies can see the demand.

If Mac Rumors could be so kind to help publicize this petition I am sure there would be many grateful people.
 
When Steve promised an SDK, he never promised some sort of Finder. I think they are separate things and one does not necessarily flow from the other. Without being able to open or save files on the phone or ipod, a word processor is useless.

That being said, I would definitely like a word processor. I already have written several things using the notes app.
 
I agree that a word processor would be great for iPhone. If nothing else, it would be great to make small edits on documents, but to be honest, making small changes is about all I would want to do on the iPhone. Yes, it is a great phone, but no program is going to make me want to type multiple pages on the iPhone. It is a small keyboard that does make errors every once in a while. I type fast on the iPhone but I don't see myself ever starting a document any longer than a paragraph or two, simply because it is still inconvenient to use any phone for typing long documents. This is just my opinion, but I think the majority people who want a word processor will use it mostly for editing and rarely for starting documents that are multiple pages. A word processor would still be a good addition to the phone.
 
Of course word processing on an iPhone would be when one simply doesn't have a laptop or desktop around. For fiction writers the ability to quickly insert formatted text when an idea pops in their head is paramount.

Are any one of you able to synch or send your text from the Notes app to the desktop (aside from emailing text)? I wish it could synch with Stickies or the notes in Mail.app
 
I'm in highschool, and tap my papers and vocab right on my iphone and then email it to my teachers. using notes gets the job done, but it could be A LOT better (like landscape instead of portrait typing)

Yes! Landscape is a must. I've been surfing the web on it and have had to enter a form in landscape and they typing is so much better that way.
 
Surely we would need some copy/paste functionality on the iphone before this would be a worthwhile app?
 
Pages.

Landscape editing.

Ability to add to dictionary.

Cut and Paste.

Ability to save as new version.

Ability to Undo.

Ability to do a text Find.

Page # displayed somewhere.

Ability to email.
 
I agree fully that we need iPortable productivity suites.

The iPHone as a smart phone should have these capabilities.

Perhaps maybe a deal where iWork owners get it as part of an update/otb.

Windows mobile phones already have them and when i had one i used it quite frequently. now i have to cary my laptop more places.

Safari and the mail app both veiw word documents.

Allso to the other post about Copy and Pate being needed. I don't know how you write your stuff but i typically type it all myself and don't need to copy or paste anything unless if I am quoting someone from a website.
 
I would be satisfied with a spell checker on notes, but formatting ability and spreadsheets would be pretty cool.
Are there any applications like this out yet?

there is an app called spreadsheet.
 
Isnt a third party already making a software for word and spreadsheet? I read an article about it and signed up to be notified when it cmae out
