transfer files via ethernet

I'm pretty sure my firewire connection is not working. I need to get some programs from one computer to another. I know years ago when I didn't have a firewire connection I connected the 2 via ethernet cable. I just can't remember how to do this. It was something with the network connection. I've looked there but it seems I would need to know or change some info and I am a little scared to mess something up. Is there an easy way to do this? Thanks in advance!
