Nothingness

I got my mac with a custom 8800GT yesterday, and so far the 8800 was disappointing.

When testing Cinebench the score for openGL was between 5740 and 6040 which is lower than the score for the HD2600 that comes stock.

After some more testing and searching, i found out with the test at OpenGL Extensions Viewer that every test was 3 to 4 times faster than a HD2600 except the openGL 2.1 which was slower.

So my guess is that cinebench only uses this version and that apple needs to do an update fast or something is wrong with my system.

For people wanna test this and post the scores: Set the test to Anisotropy at 4 and check the 'use fog' and 'benchmark'.
Then just post.

cheers

have you installed 10.5.2 and the graphics update yet?
supposedly the graphics update makes a big difference in opengl.
also, make sure you don't have one of the HD's with the bad firmware that disables the HD's cache.

I updated to 10.5.2 and did the graphics update. I even did it again and after 2 reboots the score was even lower. But these scores are always dubious so i'm not spending too much concern over the little differences.

About the disk, i should check cause i'm planning to install on 2 HDD's in a raid. But this 320 stock disk is a WD and not one of those faulty seagate's.

The best guess is there need's to be a firmware update for the card. Let's hope it comes fast cause this is shocking.

cheers

I saw a cinebenchscore in the cinebench thread where the 8800 outperforms the 2600 on OpenGL https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/346897/
Not spectacular with 6412 but still better than yours. I agree that even that score disappointed me. Guess it's the same old "waiting for optimised drivers" story again. :(

i completely agree.

But this test was a octo 3Ghz and for the openGL test there is always 1 cpu running at 100% to help. So this could explain the difference.

But in a way this relieves me from the stress cause i thought there was something wrong with my system. Now it's obvious that apple needs to get an update fast. But so far there are no new developer builds for the graphics update.

let's hope it comes fast

Any idea how it performs under windows drivers via bootcamp?

I'm not completely familar with the Cinebench values, but what target value should this card achieve?

when i take a look at the scores the openGl extension viewer gave me - compared to the HD2600, all openGl verions except 2.1 was around 3 times faster. Some even more.
So i believe the score should be more than double this 6000+ value. But who knows.
It'll take a little while before i get the windows part up and running but i'll sure check it out when it's there.

Nothingness,
You got me curious so I did my own test with CineBench:

I'm not sure what any of this technically means but I hope it helps!

We stopped using the OpenGL score in Cinebench for our performance test suite. Not only does it run in a small window (1024x768), but for some reason, the Maxon folks don't really use the GPU in the way they should.

A better test for 3D OpenGL is a contemporary 3D accelerated game like Prey. In a test we put together, the GeForce 8800 GT scored 91 fps. The Radeon HD 2600 XT only managed 36 fps. That's 1920x1200 High Quality with dynamic shadows and 8X anisotropy.

barefeats,
I sent you a PM with my cinebench scores, could you please take a look at it and get back to me? Thank you

As barefeats said, Cinebench tells you almost nothing about your GPU, because the rendering window is so small. It's mostly a test of your CPU power.

Run some games if you want to benchmark the video card.

My Cinebench scores are:
1cpu: 3688
8cpu: 21630
mpsu: 5.86 x
OpenGL: 6746

OX10.52 (without the graphics update yet)
MP 3.2 8800 2 GB ram 1TB HD

Will my OpenGL score go down with the graphics update? I will try and see. I post later

Mine was 6481. Yeah check your updates. After upgrading to 10.5.2 there's another update available called "Leopard Graphics Update". There's probably more advanced drivers in it or something...

After the graphics update my OpenGl scores went down :( from 6746 to 6450
Isn't a upgrade supposed to improve things?

Sadly I am finding similar results on the XP64 side of things with the 8800GT. We have 2 new 8 cores in the office with identical setups except one has the ATI 2600 HD and one has the 8800GT.

2600 pulled a 5203 score in OpenGL, 8800GT pulled a 4141. I know Cinebench sucks for comparisons but seeing as Cinema4D is our main 3D application in the studio this is quite the disappointment.

Anyone have any ideas? Currently running the Nvidia beta 169.28 forceware, also went back to 169.21 & 169.09 with no improvements. All 64bit drivers worked from the 10.5.1 OS X install disc with the only the Intel Ethernet driver needing to be downloaded.

Barefeats, thanks for the comments. What is your take on the tests from the openGl extension viewer ? It works fullscreen and has some settings to make the gpu work some harder.
A friend of mine has the same machine as me accept he has the HD2600. According to the test all openGL versions score very good expect the 2.1 one. On this last one the 8800 scores less then the 2600.
Or is this app not scripted for this 2.1 version?

Can't post the scores right now but i would if it helps.

Sometimes you need to run Onyx and do all cleanups. Maybe the cashes causes this. But i really start to doubt the correctiveness of the test.

this move was a good one. This way they could make more updates to the graphics. Before they only did this with every major update.

Now the next day's i'm gonne try all kinds of windows's and will check there and see. But not sure if these tests will make a difference.
