My family bought a Core Duo iMac the August before the September of the release of the Core 2 Duos. I wrote Apple and told them that I had been waiting for the update and when one didn't happen at WWDC, we bought. I told them I was wondering if I could still exchange even though it had been a month. I specified that since I knew an update was imminent, I had kept ALL the packaging "down to the twist ties." (I HAD.)
They wrote back, "Normally Apple does not allow returns of this nature, but in your case we have decided to make an exception," and went on to detail how I could return it.
I cried. Apple is the best company on the planet. Even though they give us the shaft on a backwards compatible 8800 GT and refuse to make the Mini into an xMac and don't even at least put a HDD tray similar to a Mac Pro's in the iMac... They're the best company on the planet.

Hmm... tanj in torment, I forget. I think I just e-mailed Apple Customer Relations or something of the sort. Yep. Don't get your hopes up, though.

I even started saving the twist-ties when I saw an auction on eBay for an LC, like new, complete-in-box, including every single plastic bag and twist-ties.
LC's are normally worth $40. This one sold for $795...

I wasn't laughing at TS saving the twist-ties; I save them in the box, too. In fact, most of the stuff I sell on e*ay are shipped in their original boxes and, most of the time, in the original plastic bags with the twist-ties. My wife frowns on me keeping original packaging but the buyers appreciate this...
I just found the inheritance statement funny - my wife and I sometimes talk about what we'll leave our kids and the image of their puzzled looks when the executor of our will hands them a box of twist-ties is hilarious.
I bought a MBP about a month ago before the latest update- I felt similar frustration and called as well, only because when I was configuring it on the phone I asked the guy if there was going to be an update soon (however they really don't know themselves/can't tell you anyway) but I figured it was worth a shot. I second the other guy tho- you still have an awesome machine

My friend thinks I am crazy because I have saved every scrap of packaging from all my apple purchases. The little plastic sleeve the remote came in? Sitting in my MacBook box. The end caps for my power adapter? Sitting in its box (I had to get a new one).
