Hey guys, thanks for the advice on my previous thread about picking it up through FedEx. Was quick and easy!

Anyways, my baby is charging right now and I'm just getting ready to insert the discs to reinstall the OS (every gig counts ;)). So..this is my first Intel mac since my old ibook. Looks like set up is more or less the same.

Any ideas on what I should do to push the computer early to make sure everything is working okay?

Also, what exactly does Migration assistant do? Does it just move files over? If I choose to do it later, what happens? Will it overwrite my existing data on the HD or just add to it?

why would reinstalling the OS help out with space? it doesnt come with trial ware does it?
 
Not sure about migration assistant, never used it yet.

As for pushing it, well there are ways, one easy way... that pushes the GPU and to some degree the CPU, is a game... such as WoW. You can download it, install and play it for a few days with a free trial key.

I used that to test out the GPU, CPU and the fans... see if any made excessive noises.

Did you also do a screen test? Dead pixels and even color throughout?

It comes with software like Garageband, idvd, iphoto, etc. That some people will never use, or have the professional versions.

Try and avoid the Migration Assistant if you can - not worth the trouble. It does move your files and settings over but I suspect it also moves a lot of unnecessary stuff and it always messed up somethings for me.

Now a days I just copy over the files manually or use a different data partition and then clone/restore it using CCC.

It does - for instance iWork trial, MS Office 2004 Trial. Apart from that it also installs a ton of potentially not needed stuff - language packs (gigabytes of space), Garageband and its songs etc. (multi gigs). Customizing the install allows to skip this kind of stuff which saves good amount of disk space.
 
Yeah I did that too. Extra languages I would never use and same with the printer drivers... get back a decent amount of room from that.
