Yeah there have been numerous reports of those Li-ion batteries turning into ugly balls of flame without any warning. Many major laptop manufacturers have had recalls on defective batteries due to this. I'd be a little careful when you handle that battery and definitely never use it again.
Can the battery explode even if it is not in the computer?

No, it wont explode unless you decide to douse the whole thing in water.
But it may damage your Macbook Pro if you continue to use it. This is because there is very little clearance between the battery chasis and the innards of the notebook. If the battery swells too much, it may exert pressure on the logic boards and damage something (my friend claims it was his trackpad that was affected)

Don't use this battery again, just run our notebook plugged in. You are most likely going to have to buy a new one, since this is almost always caused by dropping and physical abuse.

Not true. It's a common issue and Apple will replace it for free, no questions asked, assuming it's under warranty.
There is really no correlation between these bulging batteries and explosions by the way. A non-bulging battery can explode just as "easily". The worst thing that has been reported with a bulging battery is that it eventually "pops" the outer battery casing and exposes some of the innards, and actually lifts the notebook up a bit if its still installed. No fire, no explosions though.
Apple are sending me a new free battery (as long as I send back the bulging one) should be here in a couple of days.

As others have stated, take it out, put it in a fireproof container, and call Apple ASAP. Luckily lithium batteries will not explode with shrapnel involved, however they create a mean fire. I use LiPO batteries in my hobby, and we have to have a bucket of sand on site in case a LiPO is damaged or believed to be damaged, in which case the battery is thrown into the bucket. If there is time, one slices the battery open, and places it in a 5 gal. bucket of saltwater solution for 1-2 weeks for it to slowly discharge, in which case it is chemically stable and safe to toss in the trash.
I had this happen to an old MBP of mine. It had bulged so badly that it was starting to press up from underneath the mouse buttons and the mouse was clicking totally randomly. They replaced it no questions asked when I brought it in. They said it was a known issue with the batteries.
