MBP (1) Dead Fan (1) Dying Fan. Help please

Its so sad, I know. My first fan went out about a month ago and now my 2nd fan is on its way out. Apparently my MBP extended warranty I purchases doesn't exist according to Apple...nice.

My question is: Is this problem due to the actual fans or something else? Would it be worth my time to replace the fans, or do I need to replace something else as well? Thanks a bunch!

what do you mean your extended warranty doesn't exist?
did you purchase it on e bay?

you can actually change the fans..
it takes time, sme time when you changed the hard drive.
 
They make awful noise right before they go. Also the laptop can get really hot, to the point where it will lock up or be really slow and horrible.
 
If it's just a fan probably only $100 to have it fixed, I know somebody who's Core Duo MBP had the right fan die on it recently, and they had to pay since they didn't take my advice about applecare.
 
An authorized service provider, I'm not sure that was the exact price but what I remember hearing it was around that number for the one fan I think it was mostly labour, and this is in Canada so whatever effect that has on prices. Anyway I feel unsure now I'll ask him tomorrow what he had to pay.
 
My MBP core duo 2.0 is having the same problem. The right fan is dead. It is always at 0-RPM( no smcfan doesn't make it run :) ). The left fan has been doin' double duty for who knows how long, but recently it's started making horrid sounds. I wish I had realized the right fan wasn't working earlier...maybe would have saved the left fan. Oh well. My guess is its about to kick the bucket as well. A hardware test reveals:

The system is cool enough when I'm doing mundane things such as browsing the web, e-mail etc. but when I start compiling or playing a game like WoW it gets too hot.

Anyway, I've got a 17" penryn due to arrive on Wednesday. I'll probably call up Apple and ask for an estimate for my 15" at that point. I'll post back here when I get around to doing it to let you know what their estimate is.
 
Thanks for the good info. Yeah my left fan hasn't moved for over a month. The left one sounds like it has a small animal lodged in it. Its bad news. I'd like to fix it myself, has anyone here done that? Whats the best price you found for new fans?
 
I can't remember where I saw the replacement fans but a google search should yield some decent results. They're pricey though--when I looked it was $80ish USD I think. Also the difficulty rating for replacing them is pretty high. I'm pretty comfortable around hardware but the photo instructions has you unplugging a lot of delicate cables that made me nervous.

The other thing to consider is that it may not be the fan(at least for the one that doesn't spin)--it could be a thermal sensor or something else....

I'd at least ask apple for an estimate and what they think is wrong before you try to change parts out yourself--asking for a quote is free I believe. :)
 
Actual cost for the fans for Authorized is around 30 bucks.

If you can replace a harddrive then you can replace a fan.

If not i would imagine a typical cost would be fan + an hour of service.

Average being maybe 130 bucks at an authorized shop.

OK.. I don't know have you seen the fans in the MBP but they're not your regular of the shelf variety, like you'll find in a PC laptop if you know what i mean.

I've seen a situation where the fan was fine but one of screws that's mounts the keyboard to the top-case had become loose and fallen into the fan causing a racket. For users who's affected by this problem, it's usually easy to Identify.. as the screw will rattle about when you tip you MBP over - best doing this when it's shutdown (never do it while it's operational - you 'll short the machine out!)

If this is the cause of the problem and the internal screws have damaged or killed your machine or a part, Apple should replace the fans/repair your system for free! Cause it's an assembly defect. Screws in your machine shouldn't become lose. They should in-fact be locked into place with some thread locking fluid.

Cause I service my own system on a regular basis, I've taken the liberty to stick tape over keyboard mounting screws which ain't already covered.
 
Hate to bump a thread but it finally happened.

I noticed it when I woke up this morning.

Left Fan is working serious overtime, right fan is running at 0 RPM and the computer is hotter than I ever remember it.

Gah!!!!!

I still haven't gotten mine fixed. Let me know if you get yours remedied anytime soon!

Yeah you have to register it with Apple.

As with the fans, if it's convenient just buy your own and do it yourself. The thermal paste is also overused, so you should deal with that too.
