iPhone + push email confusion

Hey guys, I'm a bit confused about push email on the iPhone. I've heard that the Yahoo thing is a proprietary system, and that currently the iPhone does not support IDLE or any other push IMAP standard.

So, with the 2.0 update, what's the deal? Push email will be available, but I've heard 2 theories...

1) I have heard that push email will only be available through Exchange.

2) I have heard that push IMAP will only be available through the enterprise developer program and whoever decides to make apps that can support it.

Is there truth to either of these? I seriously just want to start using an ISP that supports push IMAP like Mailtrust and just have it push my IMAP email immediately to the iPhone, without Exchange, without any enterprise stuff. Just a push IMAP account and my iPhone. Is this going to be possible?
 
Well that question I have been thinking over myself for i want my IMAP Gaiml to be Push.

Blackberry users are required to create a special account in order to have their Gmail push to their phone.My gf for example, opened a free account at her cellphone service provider's website and configured her Gmail account. I believe this account is created on a Blackberry enterprise server. In the same way, if you get a Blackberry with AT&T in the USA then you'll have to create to create a similar account at their website. Apple may as well provide an Exchange server and let the users create an account in order to be able to use true push for the average Jo.

They may also move their .Mac services on Microsoft Exchange server.

If anyone can comment i'd appreciate because we need precisions
 
Nobody can comment as nobody knows exactly what is in the iPhone Firmware 2.0 (except maybe the enterprise folks who are probably under an NDA anyway). At the moment you can use IMAP IDLE through a third party app on jailbroken iPhones but that just notifies you when you have new email it doesn't actually download new emails, hopefully 2.0 enables IMAP IDLE for all accounts that support it but nobody knows at this stage!

Theoretically it should be possible for someone to write a whole new email app with the SDK, Marc of ChatterEmail fame I'm looking at you! Although he works for Palm now but one can dream...
 
i noticed, when playing around with googlemail that any emails i sent from gmail account to another, instantly showed up on the iphone, but not when sent from my work account.

Is this an odd thing, or is there a reasonable explanation?

I think the confusion is stemming from everyone dropping the MS ActiveSync part. Apple is supporting Microsofts version of push email and all the things that goes with it. Nothing else has changed with IMAP IDLE. I would suppose that if someone wanted to push mail to their clients they can create software that talks via Active Sync, but you would probably have to license the tech from Microsoft. Although I am not sure they would be willing to open up the protocol to outsiders.
 
Another Option

Here's an idea. Rather than go out and spend all the money on exchange server or exchange hosting. Try out kerio mail hosting. It works just as well as exchange and even better on the Mac.
