Anyone with a Penryn MBP w/ 5400 rpm HD?

Hi,

Quick question. Could anyone with a 5400 rpm Penryn MBP please tell me what HD you have? I have a 7200 rpm 2.4 GHz Penryn and I will be exchanging it today. I do not have the time to wait for a custom 7K MBP to ship from Shanghai again, so I will ask for a refund and simple by a stock 5K one from my local Apple Store. I want to check benchmarks at tomshardware.com.

My 7200 rpm HD is Hitachi HTS722020K9SA00. For what it's worth, it's louder and vibrates more than the 5400 rpm in my old 1.33 GHz iBook G4.

The HDD in my stock base model Penryn MBP is a FUJITSU MHY2200BH. I haven't noticed much vibration and in a quiet room with the HDD doing heavy seeking I can hear the heads ticking. Under normal use it's nearly silent.
 
I had the same Fujitsu in my MBP. I changed that out for a 7K200. I don't notice any vibration or excessive noise (the 7K200 is noisier than the Fujitsu).
 
I have the Hitachi HTS542525K9SA00 (5400rpm). I got it mainly because I knew I'd be using the computer on my lap 99% of the time and figured the 7200rpm drive would just add more heat and be louder, something I can do without (especially since the MBP gets hot enough as it is).

Everrything except random seek, I'd say the 5.4k drive is just as good as the 7.2k drive.

Also mine is a Hitachi HTS542525K9SA00

the only thing that seems to take longer on the 5,400 is the loading of big programs... like games in bootcamp and adobe in osx...


but im plannng on puttin in arround 128GB SSD later this year when they are out...
 
I have the 5400rpm, along with 4GB Ram. I was on a limited budget and opted for the $100ish ram from crucial instead. Everything is very speedy. Unless you're working with very large files, my understanding is you're working with your memory mostly.
 
I currently have a stock 5400 rpm hard drive in my Penryn MBP. I also have my old 7K200 drive that I used in my previous MB which ran really nice. I just haven't had any extra time swapping it out in my current MBP.

however, I really haven't noticed a huge difference between the two hard drives. like someone said earlier, maybe I'd see the difference if I were working with larger files but I'm not.

this is probably the reason why I haven't been in a big hurry to swap the hard drives out.
 
Yea, I first was going to get a base MBP with the 7200 RPM HD but then I'd have to order online and pay tax. So, I went with the Base model in a store in a tax-free state and saved $140 or so.

So far i'm very happy with the 5400, it runs almost silent, no heat issues and programs load up pretty fast. I wish I could have a 7200 along side it to test it out, but i'm very happy with it.

Plus, like someone else had mentioned, I might get a SSD if possible and use that instead one day.
