I have a 1.87GHz Core Duo Mac Book Pro. It turns on but only shows the grey screen with the apple logo and hangs. Both when booting from the Hard Drive or Recovery DVD.

I used Command D for the Hardware Test Utility and that reported No Troubles.

I used Command V to watch it boot and it gets stuck at "ACPI:System State [S0 S3 S4 S5] (S3)"

Can anybody advise what the problem may be.

Also it also shows "Previous Shutdown Cause: 3" but not every time.

Thanks

Have you tried to boot in save mode (holding down the shift key when booting).

Also try and boot from the install DVDs (if you are able to) and run disk utility to repair the disk and repair permissions.

Try the DVD but that has the same result.

Just tried holding the shift key and get a Kernel Pamic with the message "panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0039AE87): Unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI"."

Are you able to boot into Target Disk mode? (Holding down the T key during boot). If you can then you could connect it to another MAC (if you or a friend has one) using a firewire cable and check that the Hard drive in the laptop is ok. You could also try and repair it using disk utility on the other mac.

The only other alternative is to contact Apple. :(

Target disk mode seems to work. But I have no other mac. What about a PC? Can I connect with a PC to check drive?
