Apple 14 Day Returns policy

Hi,

Sorry for the long post, but I'm a bit confused by apples ToS...

I'm wanting to purchase a MBP, but as I'm in the north of England I can't find anywhere to try out the optional Hi-res screen, which sounds like a great option but the GUIs may be too small. However my question isn't about comparing the two:

It seems the only thing I can do is to purchase the hi-res model, and if i find it unworkable within 14 days I can return it to apple, and buy the standard one. However after looking at the terms & conditions and speaking over chat and phone services I'm still not sure what I can do with the laptop in the first 14 days without voiding the chance to return it.

The terms and conditions state that "the security seals must be intact" so that either means I can't open up the box :confused: or I can't open up the casing (which isn't an issue). The guy over apple store chat said that I could use the mbp as long as i didn't install any of my own software on it, while the guy on the phone seemed to say that there were no limitations. Has anybody got experience of this?

Isn't the high res a build to order option? I don't know about there, but in the States, you can't return custom configurations. For standard configs you can use the computer, but are charged a 10% restocking fee. Why don't you find a store that has the high res and play around on it? That seems like the best option.
 
Thanks for the reply. It seems from a conversation on the UK store chat that I can return it:

"You: can I return a custom-built laptop if it is within the 14 day period? or does this only apply to standard models
JP: It also applies to custom built notebooks."

I agree with you that the best option would be to go and see a hi res MBP, but nobody stocks these in the north of England, and we have no apple stores either.

Ouch...I have another suggestion then, find out what resolution it runs at and find a Windows laptop that runs the same resolution. That could give you a feel for how it will look.

Doh! What a great and simple idea. If there is a local computer store, try a 17" Win PC Laptop and try that resoultion. It may not be exactly the same, but like Aaron says, it will at least give you an idea!
 
Also getting used to making use of zoom in applications and using larger text sizes in the GUI.
 
I've just been to PC world today (no best buy over here sadly), but the highest resolution 17" PC laptop there had the same resolution as the 15"mbp! I guess all i can do now is order it and hope it's right. Thanks for all your advice.
