Radeon 9800 under OS 9

So I've heard that it is possible to run a Radeon 9800 under OS 9.2.2 on some PowerMacs, but it doesn't seem like ATI ever released support for it. I'm confused as to how this might work. I've scoured the internet and forums for the an answer, but no one seems to have any experience with it. Any suggestions?
