Im thinkin of getting a macbook, and i like the white more than the black, but have heard the white scratches very easily. Is this true, and if it is are the scratches easily visible

thanks

On the bottom of my macbook I see a ton of scratches but hey who looks there. On the area around the trackpad there are none(visible) but that is made of good material. So basically the only parts that scratch are the top and bottom but I don't have any big scratches so it doesn't bother me. The one thing that bothers me are the little things on the bottom that are help it from sliding because it also changes colors because of the surfaces it is on.

Would going to my local apple store and looking at the display models there give me a good idea, or would i be thrown off because hundreds of people use them everyday

thanks

I've got to say I couldn't be happier with my MacBook! I've had it for about a year ad a half. Yeah, you know a few minor scratches, but hey, what's there to expect! I've dropped it a couple of times and nothing has happened to it at all, so very sturdy indeed!

anything else i should be aware of before purchasing

thanks

Keep a close eye for the minute scratches that develop on the screen...

in the area where the "spacebar" and the "screen" make contact. If you are obsessed with your MB remaining "immaculate" like I am, then you'll want to keep your eye on this area. I keep the foam insert between the screen and keyboard for this reason. I made several trips to the Apple Store for minute scratches that appeared three weeks after my purchase, and Apple came through (6) months later by exchanging for a new BlackBook 2.4 Penryn.

Just don't drop it! My mom dropped it from about 5 1/2 feet to a wood surface and the lid didn't close right and I didn't have applecare and they still fixed it for free :).

if i just place the included cloth on the keyboard before closing will it protect the beautiful glossy screen?

thanks

thats great
did one have any cracks in the plastic from normal usage?

thats great, i didnt think apple did that sort of thing, sounds better than anything any other company would do. Most of the stories of heard are "Something Broke. 800 dollars"

Apple doesn't normally do that, applecare doesn't cover accidental damage.

That's what I would suggest...

since that's what I've done with my BlackBook and MBA. They sell different screen and keyboard protectors, but the issue is never addressed by Apple. I advised them that this could possibly be a "recall item" if you had enough people complaining about it. Apple Stores have labeled this issue as "cosmetic" but when I tried to get them to repair it, they were adamant that it would cost $600 plus tax, to fix a problem that I wasn't even aware of or should have been warned that it could surface or result from "normal wear & tear!" Good Luck.

I read about the keyboard thing quite a bit before buying my Macbook. So I too keep the foam insert between the screen and keyboard. Been a few weeks now and not a single scratch.

Don't go to the Apple store and ask to see a new white MacBook, ask to see an old white MacBook from behind the counter. Then decide.

As far as the keyboard and the glossy screen, for my blackbook I bought the iKleer cleaner pack, it came with a gray keypad cloth that just fits over the keys, that's worked pretty well for me so far. The foam insert that came with the MacBook seemed cheap IMO.

is the only immediate preventative measure; yes, if you can find something to protect the keyboard and screen, go for it. Everyone should know that the primary cause of the minute scratches that line up with your spacebar is the pressure on your MB while it's closed and in your backpack. The MB being placed in your backpack with your 3-4 textbooks and the constant movement while you are walking or putting the backpack on the ground is the culprit. So be careful when you are looking for a backpack for your textbooks and MB! I've bought a backpack specifically designed to house my BlackBook/MBA and it's cables, cord and magsafe charger and nothing else. Just take more precaution with your MB and keep it looking new!

thanks, when bringing to classes i would carry it in a separate bag anyway, (i have a few thousand page textbooks)

I carry my white MacBook in this Tucano Sleeve inside my backpack.

So far, nothing but minor scratches that you can only see in light on the bottom of the case. That's probably from sitting on my lap.

I just recently got the Belkin Single Fan Laptop stand / cooler from NewEgg

That remedied the scratch problem from moving around in the house / lying in bed with the lap top, or really sitting anywhere where I'd be using the laptop on my lap.

Other than that, get some iKlear and you'll be all set on keeping your laptop looking clean and what not. I don't really have a problem with minor scratches on the keyboard and stuff. That's going to happen with regular use. <3 the MacBook though. And I love the shiny white over the black.

Just be a bit more delicate with the White ones :D

I've had mine white macbook for 2 years, and it is still looking very good, just take care of it. but if I'm honest it's like anything, after about 2 weeks, you'll stop being scratch obsessed and not really care about the odd one or two scratches. My main thing is keeping dust off it. Oh and keep it out of direct sunlight, because then scratches show up really well

As far as cases are concerned, on impulse I bought an Incase Nylon Sleeve for MacBook plus the neoprene cover but returned them less than a week later after seeing (and immediately buying) a Brenthaven ProLite I (also for the MacBook) in another Apple store while traveling on business. From one week with the Brenthaven I'm convinced its ten times the protection the Incase nylon sleeve (case) with the neoprene sleeve (cover).

Dude, don't even think about it. Get a sleeve for general protection (or a laptop backpack, which is what I replaced my sleeve with), and use your computer instead of fussing over it. If the worst thing that happens to your MB over a year is a case full of scratches, consider yourself lucky. I know which I'd rather have between the former and a dead hard drive, dead logic board, dead superdrive, dead USB ports, cracked screen, cracked shell, burnt Magsafe...
