UnPartioning a Hard Drive

I did a search, but couldnt find exactly what I was looking for...so here goes..

I have an 80gb hard drive that was originally in a sony laptop. I got an external case for it and had been using it as an external hard drive when the sony laptop died... It was partioned basically in half to have to volumes of roughly 40 gigs...

I cant seem to get rid of this partition in leopard to create one disc of 80gbs again. I have used the disk utility tool and erased many times...but it keeps creating two partitions...

What am I missing? Is it possible to de-partition a drive?

Is there a freeware version? I hate paying 50 bux for whats going to be a one time use...
 
Assuming you're just trying to wipe it and start fresh with a single partition (rather than repartition without losing data), Disk Utility SHOULD be able to do this. Are you sure you're clicking on the drive itself in the list to the left, and not one of the indented partitions?

Try this:

Click on the drive's item (it'll say something like "74.5GB [some model number]") to select that in the list (not one of the partitions indented under it), then go to the "Partition" tab, then select "1 partition" from the popup, and if you want click "Options..." and select the partition type you want (probably APM). When you've done all that, click "Apply" and see if that does it.

Ive tried that...and it still creates two partitions...everytime it goes to erase it creates a new partition labled untitled...Ive erased the disk now so there is nothing on the drive itself, but I would like to just get it to be one drive of 80gbs instead of 2 of 37.6 or whatever it partitions it to.
