Ok, I've been touting on here to everyone who claims that the current MBP is a 'refined' product is wrong and now I feel right in saying that. I also feel more confused than ever about when to get an MBP.

The apparently refined MBP we have now has had plenty of issues over time with warping, stupidly high temps, yellow screens and now beams of light on the penryns. This product has been around for YEARS not months, YEARS and if anything they have never become 'refined'.

Now these people touting the MBP as a refined product say that you shouldn't get the MBP in the summer if it has a case redesign as it will be a Rev A product with plenty of problems and that you should buy the current MBP. Are these people blind???

I now think that there is never a good time to buy an Apple product, just a lucky one.

I think your mistaken, the reason why the defects occur is because apple doesn't assemble anything. They are made in China, the parts and assembly. The quality of the assembly isn't that great, and thats were the problem lies. I've read that some of these assembly lies are unfortunately done by untrained people (cheap labor). So Apple only way of improving is by improving its assembly because 90% of the time its a assembly issues. The machine itself assembled right is perfect.

It IS a refined product! Compared to what it was like in the beginning of the product line....

Seriously, only incredibly OCD people like myself notice all the small issues. Most of my friends/colleagues who have purchased MBPs have been extremely happy with them. Now is the time to try your luck! ;)

get a current model and call it good. if it has defects, then return and keep returning until it's right. this is my 1st apple product and it is 100%. i am very happy with it. if it had arrived with a yellow screen or some other "unacceptable" flaw then i would have returned it until i was 100% happy.

get one now and don't worry about what a small % of users are saying.

cheers guys. I don't NEED one now so I won't be purchasing just yet. I'm going to wait for montevina and see what happens then. I do like the current design BUT (i know i'll get slated for this) I don't like the kyeboard as it just feels really cheap so hopefully one will come out with the mba keyboard i'm used to on my works imac.

It's mad, I must have converted 5 people to mac in the past year alone and while they're all loving their new machines and apples excellent customer service, I'm still here without my mbp because i'm being so picky!

I know this is objective, but, the current macbook pro keyboard is the best keyboard I have ever used and I will be very upset when it is changed.I have a bad feeling it will be moved to the macbook/macbook air keyboard in the future and so I have purchased a current MBP so I can enjoy the wonderful keyboard for a long time.

I spend all day on my keyboard so I feel like I'm a good judge of its comfort. But everyone is different...

Sorry... I disagree with you!

The MBP isn't Made in China... it's only "assembled in china" (look at the back). There's a difference, very very slight difference you know.. I'm sure MIT professors would point out your error, perhaps you should do some research and educate yourself?

Doesn't matter what you've read... Having been in and out the whole of my macbook pro, I've ripping it to shreds and making custom adjustments here and there.. I know roughly 90% of the parts are not created or sourced in China, they are indeed imported from other regions. Chances are, they're either manufactured to Apple's specification, or customised of the shelf parts with Apple firmware.

Take for example the TFT and the Combo or SuperDrive, often enough they're from South Korea. The HD itself is probably from either Thailand or the Philippines's... I know this why? cause it's printed on the part.

There have been issues with Apple products since day 1 and every other manufacturer for that matter. The Macbook pro is a product that has been changed and improved over time. I myself am not 100% happy my MBP 17inch purchased a year ago but I am 90% happy and I am not going to let the 10% stop me from getting on with what i want to do on my laptop. Ive done the waiting game before and just think of the lost productivity in waiting for the latest and greatest which is outdated as soon as it ships to your door. Everything is always outdated , just wait for a decent (like penryn)update and jump in the game, and make the most out of it.

As for reliabilty, do get apple care and use it to the max. We should expect good service and a great product, but perfection in machines aint gonna happen any time soon.
Those of you that point out the fact that machines assembled in china are to blame. maybe you could show standards dropping a bit but I want to know how many of you will be happy to pay a lot extra to have your machine assembled in Elk Grove, Califonia like the imac used to be.

Remember when looking at forums like this you generaly get to see mostly whats wrong with products.

Anyway good luck with your purchase.

My 2 week old 15.4 Penryn MBP is flawless. None of the issues that seem to pop up on this board. The only time I've noticed any excessive heat issues is when I am playing a game and the laptop is in my lap.

I think a lot of people are saying it's refined in terms of design, maybe not so much quality control, which is a separate issue. There's not a whole lot you can do with the existing design to make it better. I guess making it more MBA-like would be the next design pattern, but I actually prefer the MBP design over the MBA.

Also, based on the recent articles about the new Montevina now being pushed back until early 2009, I wouldn't expect to see a new case design until MacWorld 09. That's quite a while from now.

What not made in China these days?

Shabbis, where did you see this?

Not the refurbs, etc. But if you order it from the Apple Store, it's coming from China. The parts come from different places though.

Hmm..
I'm sure they're still 'assembled in china' if you look...
they might not be shipped from china, cause sending them back - kinda makes no sense. Plus, there are plenty of qualified engineers in the western world, remember that folks, all of them are more qualified than the ones who are assembling your Mac in the dim factories...

What not made in China these days?

Please get it right...

Assembled in China ≠ Made in China

My Keitai (mobile) ain't...

Actually, if you really look there's loads of things.. especially if you look at high-end broadcast equipment and life-support machines used in hospitals. :p

Oh, stop the Made in China bashing. It's so ***** ignorant and borderline racist.

Everything is built TO SPECIFICATIONS. If you specify for quality X, you'll get quality X, otherwise Apple would sue the Chinese manufacturer for breach of contract. If a product's quality isn't up to your personal standards, the more likely reason is that it was specified for that quality and tolerance by Apple in the first place. Apple obviously is more willing to pay for warranty and replacement costs than the added production costs of a higher quality product.

There is no such thing as a 0% failure rate in a product. Every product is manufactured to an acceptable level of failure (i.e., tolerance). The closer you approach 0%, the higher the manufacturing costs. It doesn't make sense to sell a Macbook for $10,000 just to guarantee a 0.1% failure rate. At some point it makes more sense to produce a product with a slightly higher failure rate at a much lower cost, and use warranty service to cover the lemons.

Ya, who said anything about Montevina being delayed? I haven't read anything about it.

you have got to be kidding. You can find a million ways to improve the design just buy reading a Macrumors thread when a new MBP is about to be announced.

Higher res screen, HDMI, wider opening angle, better keyboard, larger trackpad, magnetic latch, hard drive bay, better screen hinge mechanism, separate media control keys ...

well we've got the hi-res in the 17 incher..and i think the trackpad is big enough..its already quite larger than its non-mac variants. Now the powerbook trackpad is a different story. I dont think apple will put an entirely separate row of media keys. Its not in their nature.

but i do agree with you on the screen opening angle. Its not good at all.

I must say, it looks refined. And when it works fine OMG this new computer flies.

I got one of the new ones with:
- Faulty HD
- A bump on the trackpad
- A funny noise when scrolling

So it is refined but Apple needs to hire a better guy in China to do QA.

I heard everything is assembled in china because all the monks from the Shaolin temple assemble products for free!! They also use their kungfu for a 80% faster productivity! :D
