I was recently having troubles playing music on my iPod, so I decided to sync it to see if it would solve the problem. However, when I did, I got this message from iTunes:

I really don't think my MacBook could possibly store over a billion gigabytes worth of podcasts :p

I just thought that this was funny and wanted to share it with everyone. And by the way, it was 1.1.4 jailbroken, which probably caused the problem in the first place :p

While I did not have a problem with over 1 billion GB of space needed, I DID encounter a similar situation over the weekend.

To make a long story short, I wanted to load some photos onto to my 32B Touch, and decided to use an old 64M thumb-drive as the host "folder" ITunes would collect the photo's from.

The drive had just five Meg of photos on it, and when I tried to synch ITunes to grab the photos and place them on the Touch, after a few minutes it said there wasn't enough room on the 64M thumb drive to do the job and that it needed over 700M of space to do it (I can't recall the exact number, but it was over 700M). Needed 700M of space to transport 5M of data? What the heck for?

My Touch is not jailbroken. Had it just 6 days, so I am not so sure you statement that yours being jailbroken is the probable cause of your problem. Might be, but in my case it certainly is not.

I just updated (ish) my iPod to 1.1.4 from 1.1.4 and it fixed the music issue. Of course, that deleted all of my apps, the January update, and the wiggly icons, but interestingly, I managed to somehow keep all of my web bookmarks :p
