The apple store has the 8gb model shipping in 5-7 days (same as the 16gb version). Is that normal? Or could this be the early signs of something happening? Price drop maybe?

yeah, this looks like the type of stuff that start happening before a minor update. Bestbuy here in canada is aso selling the touches for cheaper and they only seem to do this on major holidays or right before a price drop. This is how it worked right before the shuffle prices got brought down and the 2gb model was added.
I only see this meaning one of two things. Apple is either having supply problems or they are trying to phase out the 8 and 16GB iPhones. With as many people are out trying to sniff out news I think we would hear about reasons for a supply problem. My belief is Apple is phasing out these two models.
