So I just finished canceling my Verizon contract.

Now tomorrow I'm out to try and buy an iPhone. The only problem is that the only place that sells iPhones within quite a few hundred miles of where I'm at (in Alaska) is the various AT&T stores. So a few questions:

1. Do I have to pass a credit check in the AT&T store? My mother is going to put the plan in her name, but she isn't available during the day to come with me to the store. Can I just buy the phone from AT&T, and sign up for the actual plan via iTunes?

2. Are there any horrible disadvantages of buying from an AT&T store, as opposed to buying online from Apple?

They don't need any info at the ATT store. All you do is buy it there. You activate it and choose a plan via the iTunes Store when you get home. I bought mine from the ATT store and didn't have any problems at all.

That wasn't true when I bought my iPhone. AT&T ran a credit check at the store to make sure I (actually my mom since we do wireless stuff in her name) had good enough credit. I've heard that some stores do this and some don't but there's no way to know without going. If you're really nice they might waive it too.

I bought two iPhones within a one month period and both times all I had to do was pay and leave. They did ask for my email address but that was it. I paid and left.
