17" MBP just ordered! Questions....

Placed my order this morning with Apple for a 17" Mac Book Pro and LED Matte screen. (standard configuration on operating system). My shipping confirmation is saying I will have it on Thursday - WOW!! Way to go Apple, I also ordered Iworks and Time Capsule 500GB.

Anything I should know or be aware of when setting everything up? I am a newb to Apple and want to do it all right.

Also - What if any anti-virus is reccomended? I have heard many Mac users not using an anti-virus at all? Coming from a PC and windows, this just blows my mind.

TIA for any and all replies - I can't wait to get it!
 
I dont use an anti-virus software, everything is pretty self-xplanatory.


I used to use a Norton based subscription...but I didn't really like it.

Newbie here too, and now that I am used to the "chicklet" keyboard on my iMac 24, I'm realising I maybe should have gone with a lappy.

Oh well, maybe I'll win some money.....some day??

you dont need antivirus apps for OS X. some are developed by Norton and Avast but all they do is scan for Windows viruses so you dont infect your PC buddies… but if you ask me they should be scanning for viruses themselves.

when the first true OS X appears youll here all about it on here and the guru members will tell you how to get rid of it if you become infected and restore from a Time Machine backup. then it would probably be a good idea to get AV software... but not now as its unnecessary and slows down your Mac.

for setting up you can look .

also all new Macs come with an iWork '08 trial so im pretty sure all you have to do is enter the serial from your iWork purchase and you will have the full iWork suite. but there maybe be extra themes and stuff on the iWork CD im not sure, if thats the case install off the CD.

Just saw the 17" LED for the first time in the Apple store. WOW! The 17" LED screens are incredible. You're going to love your new MBP.
 
Congrats... what is the reason for the 17" ? Just curious...

My wife has a Dell 17" and its too big to carry around...

We kept waffleing between the 15" & 17". We rarely will be traveling with it and wanted the LED screen, so in the end the 17" won out. It really will end up be a desktop replacement, a "portable" desktop replacement!

Are you referring to the High Res screen. Because both the 15" and 17" have LED backlights.

This is from the Apple site when ordering the 17" MBP. This info is N/A on the 15" Base MBP.

"About display resolution
The standard 1680 x 1050 resolution on the 17-inch MacBook Pro offers as many pixels as the 20-inch Apple Cinema Display.

From the tech specs sheet --> here it states that the 15 inch also has an LED backlight.

Confirming that the 15" MBP all have LED screens now.

I wish they had an option for a 1650x1080 resolution though.

People think that's too high of a pixel density for a 15" laptop, but I loved it on my old 15" WUXGA Dell laptop. So fresh and so crisp crisp. The Full HD res is really the main thing pushing my decision towards the 17" MBP...
 
About the anti-virus thing, I only have one recommendation.

If you're going to use Bootcamp or any form on Windows on your new Mac, install anti-virus for it.

The last thing you need is to have a virus get in on your Bootcamp partition and wreck havoc. I'm not sure how much havoc it could wreck, but any havoc is too much.

My wife has a HP 17" which is also too big and heavy - the 17"MBP is quite svelte, however, and much less hassle to use on the move =]

To clarify, I believe you mean to say that if you're going to use Bootcamp, you should install WINDOWS anti-virus software on the Bootcamp side, and NOT on the OS X side. Bootcamp is like a Window's PC and needs an anti-virus the same as any other Window's PC to protect that partition.

If you ordered from the online Apple Store, and custom ocnfigured anything - your software choices kicked in. You chose no iWork preinstalled, so you got no iWork... not even the demo copy. Typically custom configurations come with nothing installed except what you ask specifically ask for.

I just purchased a 17" MBP custom configured to the 2.6GHz C2D, 7200 RPM Hard Drive, and Hi-Res display. It came with nothing but Leopard and iLife installed. My wife purchased a 13" MacBook off the shelf at our local Apple Store and hers came with Leopard, iLife, iWord Demo, MS Office Demo, OmniForm (Full Copy), Quicken (Full Copy), Comic Life (Full Copy), and several full FreeVerse Games.

I may have a better machine, but she definately got the better software package.
 
Not all trials...

I agree... faster Mac is definately better. It just sucks that as much as I spent, I had to turn around and pay for copies of ComicLife and OmniForm. These are actually both apps that I use. She got them free with her less expensive MacBook and I had to buy them for my top-o-the-line MacBook Pro.

The bad part is that she doesn't even use them... BTW - Since she doesn't use her license, I tried to install (and copy) them to my MBP; however, the apps wouldn't run because they knew that my MBP was not the machine they were bundled with.

Oh well - No big deal. I've still got tons more real estate and a faster Mac. Hers is smaller, more portable, and "cuter" (she says). We've both got the right machine to fit our needs.
