BlackBerry Vs iPhone in Business

Hi Everyone,

I am running an online survey on BlackBerry Vs iPhone in Business on my BlackBerry forum. In order to get a true and far result I require non BlackBerry addicts (like myself) to cast a vote. If possible please post a comment on why you believe the iPhone in its current or proposed form will be useful as a business tool (Pros and Cons if possible).

You're not gonna get the most balanced view on a Blackberry specific forum, I'd have thought, although those results are probably right, considering the iPhone's current(pre 2.0 software) state. Best to ask the question again sometime in early/mid July. ;)

10% saying yes, 10% considering it. That's pretty good from a Crackberry base.

You could ask another poll such as would you buy and use an iPhone for non-business use so you can then see how many users as a percentage might have both. Not using for business doesn't mean they don't want to either - it might just be technicalities of setting it up for their business (till IT says yes, corporations won't be getting their push email through the Exchange for example).

And a follow up a day or two after WWDC on the 9th June might show a swing - could be interesting.
 
Just wait until the SDK kit is released in June along with corporate support.

The iPhone will blow away the Blackberry then.

But, for now, it simply does not stack up against the Blackberry in corporate environments. Security and data integration being the biggest flaws, but that will soon change.
 
I'm a Mac user and have been hanging out on MacRumors: Forums for several years, but I didn't purchase an iPhone. I use a BlackBerry Pearl. Recently I discovered blackberryforums.com and venture over there daily. I believe the forthcoming 3G iPhone with the version 2 software could give the BlackBerry a run for its money.

One thing that might be more challenging for Apple though, is the way the BlackBerry is viewed as a business device. Even though I would never compute on anything but a Mac (if I have the choice) I like the status that goes along with my BlackBerry when it comes to mobile communication. The temptation will be great however, when the 3G iPhone hits the streets, and unless RIM releases the much speculated about 9000 series with killer software enhancements and touch screen interface/slide out keyboard they will definitely start to see some business users cross over to the iPhone.

What's the latest in the rumor mill regarding the 9000 series phone? I've seen the recent screenshot. If that's it, RIM is going to lose a lot of customers to Apple in 2008.
 
It depends on price and contract ties. No way are businesses going to be forced to be tied to one network unless there are some very sweet incentives to do so or they already have a preferred partner agreement.

A lot of people here are making the mistake of equating business purchasing to personal purchasing.
 
Landscape

I use both a Blackberry (provided by my company) and an iPhone (personal). Until email can be read in the landscape mode of the iPhone it won't be usable for business. It's OK for my personal email, but for anyone who receives a large quantity of email daily the iPhone screen non-landscaped is just too small.
 
I think the iPhones keyboard will be why it doesn't sell overly well in the business when you get e-mail a lot you will really want the real keyboard. iPhone may have the nice software but hardware matters too.
 
While I am a big supporter of Apple and its products, I also have been a BB user for the last 3 years. I have an iPod Touch and as much as I try I don't think I can envision the iPhone - in its current form - to make me want to move to a BB.

While the software and connectivity might be available with 2.0, simply put the virtual keyboard just isn't the same. I know many people love it and have gotten used to it and type on it like its second nature and I just haven't been able to do that. Again, the BB has had a 3-year head start for me, but still - it was much easier to pick up (I use sure-type).

That being said, if I worked for a place that decided to go to iPhones instead of BBs I wouldn't mind. I'm sure it'll be a quite capable device but if i had to choose, I'd go w/ the BB.
 
I've found that abid Blackberry users hate iPhones, and most of their users.



The truth is, they are butt hurt. Especially after the next June update, which pretty much its 100% iPhone > Blackberry.
 
Thanks for all your feedback on this topic. Just for the record I own and use an iPhone and I think as a personal device it's great for all non work purposes (I mainly just use it as an iPod and for internet in WiFi areas).

To answer all questions and points:

1. I was going to make it so you don't have to register but that allows people to vote as many times as they like which will corrupt the results.

2. I will rerun the survey once version 2 is released and people have had a chance to use the devices in a business environment.

3. The 9000 series will most likely be a 89xx series device but I believe a touch screen device ISN'T coming any time soon. Refer to this article for more info: http://www.blackberryforums.com.au/forums/blackberry-news/1616-vodafone-roadmap-blackberry-8xxx.html

4. If you are interested you can run the same survey on this site and I will post the results on my forum to show "real world" comparisons.
