New Mac Convert: Something Odd I'd like you to look at

I'm a mac convert. YAY! I love machines that just work. So glad to be rid of Wim32.

It however new to me. I noticed when doing some work that i had, in my shared section of Finder. "paradigm's remote desktop"

I dont know what that is. Is this someone on my network? Ive attached a screenshot. I can only Open or get info on this when i cntrl click it. Does nothing and gives no information.

Any ideas?

do you have File Sharing enabled in System Preferences? by default Finder will look for other Macs on your network via AFP.

also just as an observation from your screenshot. dont run apps in their disk images. once you open the disk image drag the app to your Applications folder and then eject and delete the disk image. this is a common mistake made by switchers... hey i did it!
 
turn file sharing off, and firewall in stealth mode.

firewall: system preferences -> security -> firewall

file sharing: sys. pref. -> sharing

This is good advice but if no one else should be on the OP's network then he needs to turn on some wireless security (I assume you are using wireless).
 
Even though it's good advice to turn file sharing off on your machine unless you specifically want to share files with others, this is not what is causing 'paradigm's remote desktop' to show up in your Finder. It's there because THEY have their "file sharing" on, whether through Mac OS X or Windows or whatever.
 
Yeah, I always have anywhere between 2-6 other people's computers appear in my Sidebar. My filesharing is off, firewall is on, and there are no foreign clients on my router list.
 
Some extra security here would be best as others have suggested. Protect yourself.

Anyway, you could always see if you can put a text file named "I Can See You.txt" to let them know to turn on their security.

Just a thought.

I was at my wife's parents house and notice like 5 unsecured networks. I made an honest attempt to contact each person (all of which were or should I say appeared to be peoples grandparents who just didn't know what to do) and help them establish a secure network and inform them of the risks and educate them a little bit.

Now every time we go there, we're showered with baskets of fruit/breads/you name it and we made some nice friends.

If you know the person who owns the computer your seeing then it's easy, if not and you think it might be a neighbor then tighten up your security and inform them of what you see. If you can see them, unless you tighten up your network, they can probably see you.
 
same problem

i see 2 other names under sharing on my imac also, I'm not connected to a network, and I have file sharing turned off, any help appreciated. Thanks, Larry
 
now sharing is gone

now its gone after i did somethings suggetsed here thanks guys way cool

Okay, here's what's happening then. Being connected directly to your DSL modem, your computer is being assigned an IP address (presumably) by your DSL modem. If there are any other computers connected the same way and they are in the same subnet (i.e. the xxx.xxx.xxx part of your xxx.xxx.xxx.yyy address) and they have file sharing turned on, they will show up as shared computers in your finder. So, they are at risk, since you can at least browse their folders. But you can be assured that if you don't have file sharing turned on yourself, you won't show up in their list of shared computers.
 
curious

when i bought this imac back min feb. the sales person took a long time comingout of the back with my new imac, any chance he could have given me one that had been returned previously?cause it says it was made in sept. 07
