So after taking a few of my DVD's and converting them using the latest Handbrake version I can't say how EASY it was and how well it works.

I bought a movie from iTunes and it took up 1.5 gigs on my phone. Yet the ones Handbrake converted were on average 750mb. !!!!

Just wanted to share my experience ..... :D

The ones from the iTunes store will probably scale better to a big screen. The ones you created using the iPhone setting will look perfect on the iPhone but you if you tried to play them on your tv, they would look very pixellated. But handbrake is very easy to use and I'm glad you're happy with it.

I've recently started using Handbrake and am left a little confused. Using the iPhone setting, the videos will play fin in iTunes but need converting from .mp4 to .m4v before they will copy to and play on the iPhone?

Am I doing something wrong?

Otherwise it's an excellent app and has replaced MacTheRipper.

I am converting now .... and using the iPhone/iPod Touch option converts to .m4v

I just drag the file over to iTunes and sync my phone and i am done.

Are you using the newest version of HandBrake ?

HandBreak is great, been using it since I got my phone. The quality is great and it only takes about 40 mins for a full ~4 gig movie.

I love handbrake! It works great, and the quality is very good. I just use the iPhone presets ( I put 320 in the second size box, this creates a little distortion, but I like the whole iPhone screen to be filled) Mine takes a long time to encode a DVD (about 3-3.5 hours for a 2 hour movie) but I think that is because of my computer.

Anyone using Vista and get no response and this is all I can find...
"Missing output file name. Run /cygdrive/c/Program Files/Handbrake/HandBrakeCLI --help for syntax."

I also love the iPhone preset...despite not having an iPhone.

On my 24" monitor the files still look quality. In fact, they look better than all the stuff I ripped in a normal mode on a previous Handbrake release with a higher kbs. Dunno why.

I apparently am having trouble getting movies that look good on a big screen but will also play on the iPhone. I didn't think there was anything wrong with my latest format, but apparently there is.

If you are just watching them on the iPhone you can make them even smaller if you play the the settings a little. The iTunes copies look really good even on large screens, which it why the files sizes are huge.

v0.9.2 which I believe is the latest.

However I have now found a setting in prefs that says Use iPod/iTunes friendly (.m4v) file extension for MP4 so will give that a try.

Darren, rips made using the iphone/ipod touch preset in Handbrake should work without any modification on your iPhone - I have 5 movies on mine just now that were done using that preset, they work fine. If you upgraded from an older version of HB, it may not have updated the presets: try updating the presets via the menu (sorry, forget which menu it's in just now and don't have it on my laptop here) to make sure you have the latest ones - they're tweaking them all the time.

HB setting question

I was using HB this morning and noticed that there is a check box now that says "include ipod atom". Anyone know what that does? I'm ripping to my iphone and have never had a problem, but also have never checked that box.

Ideas?

Handbrake really ROCKS! I tried it today. The movie are sharp and the sounds is crisp. It took me to convert in 1.5 hour in Hitman movie.

My setting is iPhone/Touch preset and m4v files. Then I added the files to iTunes.

Can Handbrake be used to convert camcorder movies from my PC to iPhone format? They are now in a .mpg format, it is a Sony hard drive camcorder.
Or does handbreak only do DVD's?
