media player for mkv files

I have tried VLC, Cellulo, MPlayer and even Quicktime with the right plugins and so far none of these players seem to play this 10080p mkv file properly. VLC seems to crash alot but none of the players offer acceptable performance.

My Macbook Pro has a 2.4GHz CPU with 4GB of ram...

Any suggestions?
 
It's probably a 1080p High Profile H.264 MKV illegally obtained from HD DVD/Blu-ray? In that case, the high profile H.264 decoders on OS X are not heavily optimized, so you might just have trouble playing it in general. Not that I have a lot of sympathy for you not being able to play pirated material. My suggestion would be to "not steal ****." :rolleyes:
 
In response to the original poster, VLC is pretty good, try some nightly builds some are better than others. however, what is very promising, even though it is still early in development is Perian which allows you to play .mkv in Quicktime, and i think it can do things like .DTS sound now, try www.perian.org. if you are playing HD files you will need a fairly decent comp, i usually stick to 720p, but thats mainly due to file sizes.

I don't know if killmoms is trolling, but it seems a bit ignorant to accuse the OP of using 'illegally obtained' material?!

Few misconceptions in your post concerining piracy and copyright infringement. Firstly, you cannot simply assume that the person is watching or using a file obtained illegaly. The file could just as well be a legitimate copy. Secondly, copyright infringement is not stealing. Especially when refering to computers. No physical object is taken, rather a copy is made of the original. That however does not mean that piracy or copyright infringement is legal or right. Its just not stealing.

Technically, you are right. Of course, there's no such thing as a legitimate copy of a Blu-ray or HD DVD disc in the U.S., since in order to create one you'd need to break the DMCA. So, even if it was ripped from a disc he owned, it'd still be an illegal copy. And let's face it, if you know enough to create an MKV file (using tools that only exist in Windows), you probably already know about the state of High Profile H.264 decoding on OS X. ;)

Just saying.

It May Be Illegal In US But the OP Might Not Be From The US He/She Could Be From Europe Where Back Up's Of Any Media You Own Is Legal. Not Everyone Is From The US.

OP, It Might Be The Video File Is Corrupt Or Not 100% Playable if You Have Tried VLC And Have Perian Installed For QT And It Still Doesn't Play Right It Could Be Your Specs Or File Corrupt. I'm betting File Corrupt As Your Specs Are Decent By The Looks Of It. If You Can Re-Download The Video File.
 
Thanks to the poster who automatically assumed I was watching pirated material...

I'm in Canada and it is not illegal to make backups of my own discs.

And top top it off since we're both in Canada we already pay the parasites in the entertainment industry for the "privilege" of using their content through the blank media tax on EVERY CD/DVD sold no matter if it is for your own personal data or not the scumbags get their cut anyways.
